I use an integrative approach, combining Gestalt, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Gestalt Therapy is the core of my approach, which is an embodied way of working with clients. Physical sensations can provide useful information, as well as the thoughts and feelings that are present. Gestalt Therapy uncovers the patterns of relating you have acquired throughout your life so you can decide if these patterns are no longer useful. I will help you uncover and express your feelings so you can take control of your own life and find self-acceptance.
Psychodynamic approaches focus on the root cause of your difficulties, exploring how patterns may have developed over time. I create a safe environment for you to express your pain, shame and traumatic memories, when you feel ready, to strengthen your belief in your capacity to cope. I will help you uncover unconscious beliefs and emotions so you can gain insight into what may be causing you to feel stuck or lost, with the aim of having more satisfying relationships.
CBT provides useful tools for identifying and challenging unhelpful, negative thought patterns. We can examine where these thoughts may have come from, whether they fit with your own personal values and reframe them into more positive and beneficial thoughts that enable you to cope better with the world you live in.
The most important aspect of the work we will do together is the relationship we build between us, so that you feel safe and able to trust me. The sessions are directed by you, and I work to your pace. You do not need to talk about anything unless you feel comfortable doing so. I place no expectations on you to talk about specific issues and you are in control of what you bring. I have a trauma informed approach to my work and have experience of working with people who have experienced many types of abuse. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more. I offer a free telephone consultation to potential clients.
